About: An atmospheric 2,5 D side-scrolling game where you play as a little girl in a space suit, searching for clues as to what has happened on board a derelict space station. You are armed only with a teddy bear, which can be used to repel the mutated crew members; you can never dispose of enemies, meaning you spend a lot of time fleeing and collecting oxygen tanks to stay alive.
My role: Game design, programming (C#), audio design and implementation, music composing, writing and voice acting.
What went right: The end feel of the game; the audio, the lighting, and the pacing, it all really fit the uneasy atmosphere we were going for. Something bad had gone down and you could feel it in your bone.
What went wrong: Scope. Our scope was huge, as were the levels. In the end we had only one level, which was sorely in need of checkpoints. The workload also proved quite uneven.
What I learnt: Group dynamics. The value of communication, and sticking up for your own ideas. I'm learning that too much compromise can make for boring gameplay; sometimes it's better to pick one person to carry the vision, and allow that person to have the final say. Also that playtesting is needed from the get-go; the game was punishingly difficult/required old school patience. Also, scripting, and sound editing.
